Norman Lindsay: 80 Years of Pencil Drawing

By Lin Bloomfield

Norman Lindsay produced work in many media, but pencil was the only one he used continuously between childhood and old age. Spanning 80 years, from Lindsay’s earliest reproduction in 1889 to his latest in 1969, aged 90, this is a comprehensive catalogue of his pencil works.

Reproductions include pages from his sketchbooks; preliminary sketches for what became major works in oil; detailed drawings for etchings; rough sketches showing his notes for colour plans; and pencil portraits.

Complementing the drawings are excerpts from Lindsay’s own writings, and comments from his family and contemporaries. Through 80 Years of Pencil Drawing, Lin Bloomfield explores the intricacies and brilliance of all Lindsay’s pencil works.
