Sujuni Embroidered Stole by Archana Kumari
Cotton yarn and cloth

Sujuni is a textile art made only by women from Bihar in North India. Sujuni is often called a magical and transformative art. In making a traditional sujuni,  used  and discarded textiles such as old saris and dhotis are layered together and re-purposed with embroidery to make something anew such as quilts and coverlets and also bedding for babies.  A limited repertoire of stitches is used -- chain stitch for the outlines and running stitch for filling in the motifs. Designs were typically inspired by flora and fauna present in the village. Archana Kumari was one of the first artists to create innovative sujunis by bringing in motifs that were inspired by contemporary human life. Today sujunis are made with new and not old fabric. Here she has used veg dyed block printed cotton fabric to create scarves embellished with sujuni patterns as well as pillow covers that have contemporary and traditional themes.
