Selina Bucket Bilum Bag

By Bilums & Bilas

The Selina Bucket Bilum is handcrafted using a traditional Papua New Guinea fibre called Mungus. It has a characteristic round base and stands upright. Our bucket bilum is finished with a cross body leather strap and solid brass rings for an added contemporary twist and practicality.

Each individual basket honours and celebrates the traditional techniques, knowledge and skill involved in Papua New Guinean bilum weaving.

Bilum & Bilas is a PNG-based social enterprise that supports female artisans to develop a wider market for their crafts and improve their livelihoods.

A bilum is an iconic Papua New Guinean string bag holding deep cultural and emotional significance. Bilas is decoration and adornment used throughout Papua New Guinea to celebrate diversity and express one's culture.

Bilum & Bilas contemporary jewellery is inspired by the beauty and essence of the bilum, and retains the traditional weaving techniques and natural fibres, yet in micro form. Creating intricate representations of bilum technique, streamlines the making process, enabling our small team to optimise production and create stable jobs for Papua New Guinean women with these unique skills and employing female artisans to design, develop and hand craft collections providing guaranteed income and a safe and secure work environment. Artisans receive training in fashion trends and international quality standards, supporting them to produce more competitive designs to build a sustainable business.
