From major institutions such as the Walker Art Center to independent spaces such as Marfa, Texas, this editorial project offers a global, contemporary map of the current art scene. The curatorial committee selected these centres on the basis of their efficacy in activating thought, fostering networks and supporting artists and art enthusiasts. Organised by geographic regions—Africa, Middle East, Europe, Latin America and North America—'The 99' is a reference book that reflects the projects, visions and challenges defining the global art ecosystem today. It features a special section that highlights architecture’s role in shaping this ecosystem as well as an epilogue by renowned curator Hans Ulrich Obrist.
