Description

I Came Around in Circles, a new artist book that captures the life and work of emerging artist and Yindjibarndi Elder Wendy Hubert, whose journey in painting began in 2018 but whose connection to her culture and stories stretches back millennia.

Wendy's artistic journey began only a few years ago with Juluwarlu, but her connection to the land and her culture goes far deeper. In her short career as a painter, Wendy's work has gained significant recognition, with her paintings exhibited in prominent events like the Sydney Biennale (2024), and she was named a finalist in the 2023 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA). Her art was also featured in Tracks We Share at the Art Gallery of Western Australia (2022), and it is now included in several national collections. Despite her relatively short time as a painter, Wendy’s work carries the weight of a lifetime of stories, some of which have been passed down for over 2,000 generations.

The artist book I Came Around in Circles provides a unique opportunity to glimpse into Wendy's world, her culture, and her art. This publication serves as a testament to her journey and her connection to Country, as well as her commitment to sharing her stories with future generations.

Juluwarlu Art Group

“Here at Juluwarlu, it’s always been our passion to teach the next generation, because they [the Elders] gave it to us for that reason. So we’re using any media form: digital media, sculpture, anything to do with art, canvas, we’re putting it out there to teach Yindjibarndi culture. And if that’s the way to go for the next generation to learn my culture, or learn our culture, it’s important that we keep doing that.” Lorraine Coppin, CEO
