Olafur Eliasson: Presence presents ambitious new works by one of contemporary art’s preeminent figures alongside highlights from his three-decade career. Known for his poetic and immersive practice exploring light, space and natural phenomena, Eliasson actively engages our senses, prompting viewers to consider how we perceive and participate in the world around us. From early works such as Beauty 1993, a shimmering rainbow suspended in mist, to the vast rocky landscape of Riverbed 2014, which each visitor traverses in their own way, and new works using polarisation filters, Eliasson’s creations come to life as they meet the viewer’s senses and body.

This beautifully designed and illustrated publication developed in close collaboration with Studio Olafur Eliasson, Berlin, reveals the artist’s deeply collaborative process grounded in principles of transparency, generosity, hospitality and sustainability. It features striking photographs of Icelandic landscapes taken by Eliasson, behind-the-scenes documentation of new perception-altering works created for the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, site-specific installation views and a selection of the artist’s working drawings.

Eliasson reveals key concerns underpinning his practice in an intimate and wideranging interview with curator Geraldine Kirrihi Barlow, and essays by Barlow and acclaimed writers Ceridwen Dovey and Robert Macfarlane explore philosophical and ecological themes underpinning his work. Olafur Eliasson: Presence is a celebration of artistic ingenuity, radical collaboration and the power of art to change not only how we see, but also how we live.
