The Artwork Story
Ngapa Jukuurpa – Mikanji (Desert Country Dreaming)
The original artwork is called Ngapa Jukurrpa or Water Dreaming. It depictsa place called Mikanji, a watercourse located on the ancestral homelands of the Warlpiri Aboriginal people in the Tanami Desert region of Central Australia.
The watercourse is a usually dry creek bed but after the annual rains, underground soakages are formed. The soakages are like natural wells and a vital source of permanent fresh water during the long dry season in the desert.
Due to the isolation of their desert homelands, the Warlpiri were among some of the last Aboriginal people in Australia to make contact with Europeans. The Warlpiri people’s connection to their culture is as strong now as it was when their ancestors first walked on their country tens of thousands of years ago.
The Ngapa Jukurrpa Water Dreaming story has been passed down through many generations over the millennia. This ancient narrative reflects the profound spiritual connection between the Warlpiri people and their desert homelands, embodying their cultural heritage and traditions. To the desert dwelling Warlpiri people, water is the essence of all life.
