The Brown family confectionery company belonged to a family whose involvement in the confectionery industry extended to the time of the Victorian gold rushes. John Brown, of Somersetshire settled in Dunolly during late 1850s and established a confectionery business. In 1890, his son Thomas relocated the family business to Ballarat. When the Brown’s confectionery ceased operation in 1974, the family donated their equipment to Sovereign Hill and trained staff with the assistance of a government grant, giving birth to the famous Sovereign Hill Confectionary that we know today .
