Gond Art by Mangru Uikey

28 x 38cm

The Gonds are one of the largest and oldest tribal groups in India and live in several states stretching across central India. Traditionally, Gond homes are decorated with two kinds of paintings, digna and bhittichitra, which are painted on the walls and floors during weddings and festivals.  Digna paintings are based on geometric patterns while bhittichitra is a more figurative art form inspired by the rich flora and fauna found in the Gond villages and surrounding forests. Typically, the colours used were derived from flowers, leaves, stones, rice, turmeric as well as different kinds of earth and clay found locally and traditional brushes were made of twigs wrapped with old cloth.  Today Gond artists use paper, inks and acrylic colour to create stunning works on both paper and canvas that pay homage to their rich and living culture.

Mangru Uikey is a renowned Gond artist whose works are placed in museums and private collections in the US, UK and Australia. He has also created and published a book, ‘The Bamboo Maiden’ based on the Gond story recalling the birth of bamboo. Dilip Shyam is an eminent artist in the Gond tradition whose works reveal the close kinship of different species in nature.
