Art Almanac May 2026

Description

In the May 2026 issue, Sophia Halloway speaks with Mechelle Bounpraseuth about the ceramic sculptures of food and household objects in ສູ້ສູ້ Sou Sou – including fruits of a parent’s homeland of Laos, holding particular significance in Bounpraseuth’s practice as symbols of value, culture, and family tradition. Themes of culture, community, and revision also emerge in Victoria Hynes’ interview with William Mackinnon about Phoenix; as they do in Bronwyn Watson’s ‘On display’ pick. But it’s mothers that are this month’s biggest pull on the heart strings – in Art Almanac and in the national psyche, too.

Motherhood is important in Bounpraseuth’s practice but takes a whole-of-show position in our review this month, for NGV Australia’s MOTHER. Well suited to the assignment, Emma-Kate Wilson, rightly, doesn’t keep herself as a mother out of it, tracing the emotive and unexpected contours of the show – an emotive power also captured by the Schneck work on our cover. Wilson’s review, eloquently, shows the power of the maternal. We hope you enjoy our May issue. Here’s to all the mothers.
