Mekai is the Kala Kawaw Ya word for the beach almond which grows on Moa Island. It is a food source and also good for medicine. 

A beautiful sunny morning is about when the sunlight bursts through the mekai almond leaves in the morning.

Fiona Mosby Artist Statement

I am a senior artist and Torres Strait Islander woman and I believe in the importance and value for me as a young woman pertains to the values, beliefs and unique identity that what we share, carry and can impact in the lives of our family, community and who we are as individuals. My speciality major is in printmaking: in monoprints, linocut, etching, and screen-printing. I have also explored and practiced weaving techniques from a young age with my grandmother, which I retell in my art.

As well through my employment working at Moa Arts, I have learnt many other invaluable techniques and skills. As a young passionate woman, I am dedicated and committed to being a role model for the younger generations, to use what knowledge I have about culture and tradition to make an impact, to tell the story of an island woman in preserving and embracing our cultural rights. Art is my tool to visually communicate my personal values and beliefs.

Moa Arts is the trading name of Ngalmun Lagau Minaral, which means ‘our island’s design’.
We are an Indigenous owned and operated Art Centre on Mua Island in the western cluster of Zenadth Kes – the Torres Strait.
Through our artwork we keep Mualgal traditions and Zenadth Kes arts and culture strong for everyone.
Creative inspiration for the work at Moa Arts comes from Mualgal ancestral stories, totemic representation and connections to sea, land, sky and family. Mua’s artists don’t have to look far to be inspired. The island and its surrounding waters and reefs hold a diverse set of land and marine ecosystems with niches for many rare and unique species such as dugong and sea turtle.
